1346 Caen Takes Years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts a pivotal moment in the Hundred Years War between England and France, as The British forces under the leadership of King Edward III triumphantly enter the breached walls of Caen on August 7, 1346. The siege of Caen was a significant turning point in the war, marking the first major victory for the English after their disastrous landing in Normandy earlier that year. Edward III, dressed in full armor and mounted on horseback, is shown in the center of the image, raising his right hand in a gesture of victory. Surrounding him are banners bearing the coats of arms of his noble supporters, including the Earl of Warwick, the Earl of Northampton, and the Earl of Suffolk. In the background, the ruins of Caen's city walls can be seen, with the English soldiers and archers streaming through the breach and into the city. The siege of Caen had been a long and arduous affair, with the English besieging the city for over a month. The French defenders, led by the Constable of France, had put up fierce resistance, but were ultimately unable to hold out against the superior English forces. The capture of Caen not only boosted English morale, but also provided much-needed supplies and resources for the English army, which was preparing to march on Paris. The Hundred Years War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, was a complex and protracted conflict between England and France, with various alliances and shifting allegiances shaping the course of the war. The siege of Caen was a crucial moment in this conflict, and marked the beginning of English military success in France. This print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war, chivalry, and the clash of great powers.
