EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in Scottish history known as the Battle of Nevilles Cross, which took place near Newcastle upon Tyne on October 17, 1346. The central figure is King David II of Scotland, dressed in ornate armor and brandishing a sword, leading his troops into battle against the formidable English army led by Philippa of Hainault, acting as regent for her husband, King Edward III of England. The scene is set against the backdrop of the imposing Newcastle Castle, its walls and towers looming in the distance. The clash of arms and the cacophony of war cries fill the air as the two forces collide, with the outcome of the battle hanging in the balance. King David, who had seized the Scottish throne in 1329 at the age of five, had been a prisoner of the English since 1335. He had managed to escape in 1341 and had been rallying support for his cause, leading to this decisive confrontation. However, despite initial successes, the Scottish forces were ultimately defeated, and King David was captured once again, this time being held in the Tower of London until his release in 1357. The Battle of Nevilles Cross marked a significant turning point in the long-running Anglo-Scottish conflict, further solidifying English control over the northern kingdom. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent history of the British Isles and the indomitable spirit of those who fought for their lands and their kings.
