EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tense moment during the Battle of Crecy on 26 August 1346, when King Edward III of England (r. 1327-1377) refuses to send aid to his son, Edward, the Black Prince (1330-1376), despite urgent pleas from his beleaguered commander. With the English army under the command of the Black Prince facing the vastly larger French forces, King Edward, shown here in regal attire with a scepter in hand, stands firm in his decision, uttering the famous words, "Let the boy win his spurs." The Black Prince, then a young and inexperienced commander, was determined to prove himself on the battlefield. The result of King Edward's decision was a decisive English victory, which marked a turning point in the Hundred Years War between England and France. In the background, soldiers from both sides can be seen, their flags and banners proudly displayed on their standards. Horses and their riders stand ready, their ears pricked, as the tension in the air is palpable. This powerful scene from the 1340s is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the royal figures of the time, as well as the importance of leadership and the consequences of decisive action. The image, created by Terry Parker for Mary Evans Picture Library, is a captivating and evocative representation of a pivotal moment in English and European history.
