Presentation of Addresses to Her Majesty, at the Station Hotel, Hull, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Presentation of Addresses to Her Majesty, at the Station Hotel, Hull, 1854. Queen Victoria visits Yorkshire. At one end of a spacious room in the hotel, elaborately fitted up for the occasion, was an elevated dais covered with purple, upon which was placed a throne richly carved and gilt, flanked by chairs of state for the Prince Consort and the Prince of Wales. Over the dais was suspended a canopy, the outer covering and draperies of which were composed of crimson, and the interior lining of white satin, with a crown surmounting...the Queen and Royal Family, with the Earl of Aberdeen and the members of the suite...took their stand upon the dais. Here the Mayor was introduced, and had the honour of kissing hands...Court etiquette did not allow any of the addresses to be read; and, from their length, perhaps this omission was the less to be regretted'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Presentation of Addresses to Her Majesty, at the Station Hotel, Hull, 1854," offers a glimpse into an historic moment in the annals of Yorkshire's royal history. The image portrays Queen Victoria, accompanied by her family and dignitaries, gathered in a grandly decorated room at the Station Hotel in Hull for the presentation of addresses. The room is adorned with opulence, with a raised dais at one end, covered in purple fabric and adorned with intricately carved and gilded chairs for the Prince Consort, the Prince of Wales, and the Queen. A canopy, draped in crimson and lined with white satin, hangs above the dais, bearing a regal crown. The Queen and her family, along with the Earl of Aberdeen and other members of the suite, stand upon the dais as the Mayor is introduced and pays his respects by kissing the Queen's hand. Court etiquette prohibited the reading of the addresses, likely a relief given their length. This photograph provides a fascinating window into the grandeur and tradition of a royal visit during the Victorian era.
