EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning allegorical painting, titled "Allegorical Picture," was created by artists John Absolon and Frederick Fenton for the Inauguration Dinner of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Francis Graham Moon, on November 9, 1854. The design for this patriotic tableau in the Great Banqueting-hall of Guildhall was inspired by the pencil of renowned artist David Roberts, R.A. The painting depicts two female figures, personifying London and Paris, standing side by side, each brandishing a sword in defense of the oppressed. They extend the laurel crown towards a victorious figure, symbolizing the triumph of peace and unity between the two cities. Above the central figures, Peace holds an olive branch, while Victory bears the banners of England, France, and Turkey, signifying the alliance formed during the Crimean War to protect Constantinople from foreign invasion. Fame, depicted as a winged figure, hovers above, inscribing the names of those who had fallen in the defense of liberty for mankind. An obelisk, adorned with medallic portraits of the monarchs of France and England, stands beneath the central figures, symbolizing the enduring bond between the two nations. This magnificent artwork, which captured the spirit of international cooperation and unity during a time of conflict, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. The painting stands as a testament to the power of diplomacy and the shared commitment to peace and freedom, showcasing the strength and resilience of the alliance between London and Paris.
